Victoria Howard

Victoria Howard was born in Liverpool, England, at a time when the Beatles (Twist and Shout!) were becoming popular.  Her family moved to the Wirral on the “posh” side of the river Mersey when she was eleven.  She attended the local girls’ grammar school, going on to college where she graduated with a Medical Secretarial Diploma.

She worked as a medical secretary to an ophthalmic surgeon before going on to work as a legal secretary.  In 1980 she moved to Scotland with her husband.  She spent the next twenty years living in a croft on the outskirts of a village in the Highlands, and while there, managed a company involved in the offshore oil industry.  She feels Scotland is her spiritual home, which is probably the reason why she used it for the setting of her second novel.

In October 2000, Victoria moved to South Yorkshire to be with her new partner, Stephen, and until recently, she worked for Britain’s National Health Service.

An avid reader, Victoria has always enjoyed writing and recounting stories– mainly in the form of letters to friends.  She recently completed an Open University course in writing fiction, and has attended a number of writers’ conferences.

Victoria is a member of the Romantic Novelists Association.  A frequent traveler to the United States and Europe, Victoria also enjoys walking her border collie, Rosie, gardening, listening to music, and designing knitwear.

...Victoria Howard pens a suspenseful tale full of intrigue. Have to admit I guessed wrong about who the culprit was until near the end of the book. The trail gets complicated by Jack's involvement with the FBI. He's also in a relationship that gets pretty nasty and emotional when we see that motherhood doesn't seem to be a part of his girlfriends' makeup in any way. She's one of those characters it's easy to dislike even before we find out how despicable she really is.

This author is excellent in her use of descriptive words that bring scenarios alive. Whether it's a flaming car crash or the wilds of the Florida Everglades a reader can almost feel the flames or the heat and humidity. It's fun to see Grace change. She starts as a housewife whose love for her spouse helped her deny the verbal and emotional abuse she has gone through. From there, even though panic attacks incapacitate her at times, she thrives and learns to fight her own battles in a good way. Ms. Howard is an author I want to read again.

...This book is rousing and suspenseful. Jack is a personable champion and an honorable man. Grace is a plausible heroine. There were a few times, though, I thought her a bit too naïve. Still, she had tried to be a dutiful wife and Daniel had been an unusually controlling, aloof partner. I especially enjoyed the description of the marshy, Florida Everglades. Jack and Grace’s sojourn there one night while a killer hunted them held me in thrall. For everyone who craves dangerous armchair adventure with a dash of romance, this book is just the ticket for a thrilling ride.

The House on the Shore

By Victoria Howard

This visually magical tale takes the reader on a journey from the remote shores of Loch Hourn in the Scottish Highlands to the singular beauty of Cape Cod.

When Anna MacDonald leaves Edinburgh to find peace in the Scottish Highlands, she gets a twofold surprise:  a lost sailor teaches her to love again…while a mysterious stranger has plans to kill her.

Passed over for promotion by her boss—and boyfriend, Anna walks off the job in anger.  But being reactionary has its price.  Now she can no longer afford the rent on her Edinburgh apartment.  So she retreats to the only place she has ever felt happy – her grandmother's croft on the edge of a Highland loch.  With no phone or neighbours, and only two border collies for company, Anna sets out to finally achieve her lifelong dream; to write—and sell—the novel that has burned within her for years.

Luke Tallantyre, a renowned Cape Cod artist, has sailed across the Atlantic to escape an artistic dry spell, and come to terms with his dangerous past.  When his yacht develops a problem he drops anchor in Loch Hourn.  He rows ashore, and knocking on the door of the croft, asks to use the telephone, but the reception he receives is less than welcoming – in fact it's downright frosty.

Anna resents the cranky American’s intrusion to her seemingly idyllic life.  Luke thinks she’s an ill-mannered hermit.  But an unseen assassin is after one of them.  So they unwillingly join forces and embark on an adventure neither ever imagined, including a chance at true love.

The House on the Shore is a sensually suspenseful story filled with non-stop action, romance, and mystery. The facts of Scotland are told with brilliant description that bring the land to life and leave you feeling as if you have stepped out of your world and into the pages. Ms. Howard uses such passion and emotion when telling her story, making the tale flow right along until the last page is turned. With many different characters that will keep you guessing, this novel is the perfect example of how a suspenseful story should be told. …Thrilling until the very end, this book has a who-done-it attitude with such an aching tone of sensuality and love, it will keep you up all night just so you can finish this fantastic tale.

Silly me picked the nighttime to read this delightful and suspense filled tale of Anna MacDonald and her stay at [her grandmother's croft]. I fell in love with Luke and his persistence to break through Anna’s shield of rejection that clearly protected her heart. Somewhere in the wee hours of the morning I had turned on every light in the house to continue reading. I enjoyed this book very much. It was a true page-turner.

Reviews for Three Weeks Last Spring

Three Weeks Last Spring is a romance that takes the reader on a remarkable journey that gets better with each page. Skye and Jedediah both have problems that continue to be troublesome but no matter how bad things appear, their hearts seem to connect but neither wishes to be the first to express so. It is like a cat and mouse game of wits. One thing is certain; Ms. Howard spins a tale that places the reader directly into the lives of the characters. The blending in of the plot with the fish and the breaking into the computer made the story flow smoothly. The other secondary characters contribute to the storyline to make this read a great adventure. With a plate full of action-packed adventure that kept this reader entertained, Ms. Howard creates an enjoyable read.

Reviewer: Gina Kaysen Fernandes for OnceWritten.com Reviews

Victoria Howard has written another page turner … While reading Three Weeks Last Spring you are not only reading about what is happening to Skye at the present time, but piece by piece you also find out what happened with her before she went to Seattle, about her troubled relationship .This makes your understanding of her sharpen more and more by every piece. So much happens in this wonderful book, too much to write all down in a review. But if it would be possible to rate this book 6 flags, I would do it immediately. This book is filled with so much suspense and of course romance, it deserves more than the maximum score!
